Sliver of a Moon
04:03
|
|||
In a sliver of the moon on a night like this
I saw a tiger and a woman on a precipice
they stood together all alone in the violent throes
her body naked hair whipping and her eyes half closed
She held him close to his body in the bluest night
she knelt beside him watching closely in the pale moonlight
for a minute I imagined her inside my life
the tiger stood with the snow falling from the sky
She knelt beside him with his life flowing through her veins
And sang a song that I knew no one had ever sang
As she sang in the sky I saw a brilliant flame, I heard the thunder and the waves calling out her name
she turned her eyes upon me and the tiger roared the tiger roared
she learned my whole life story in a metaphor, the tiger roared
suddenly the snow stopped and my heart did too
I held her gaze eyes level until she withdrew remember thinking this is beauty I had never known
A looking glass through which everything else was shown
the tiger stayed with his eyes look to the sea his stripes stood sentinel watching over me
a decade later I can still hear the crashing tide I see the woman through the years through the tigers eyes

Spider
04:23
|
|||
There's a spider tapping on my window
I wonder what he wants to do with me
He doesn't even know my middle name
Yeah he probably thinks that I'll set him free
There's a dead leaf crashing through my doorway
Perceives my home as a place of reprieve
It's his dead brothers that fill my driveway
Preparing for their final sleep
And my neighbors in his bear suit again
He's trying to scare my dog away from all his hands
But he won't make it through this winter, no
I'll make sure that he meets his end
There a sheriff tapping on my window
He's yelling that he needs to speak with me
I lay my head back on my pillow
Maybe then he'll let me be

If Niagara Falls
02:52
|
|||
We left Ohio pretty much the way you gave it to us
State trooper said if you don’t leave we’ll find a job back at the station, back at the station
Picked us up again on the border between Canada and New York
We were sober by then but my companion done lied
In a customs jail with no bail, looked to my pal, he said this feels just like home
In fact I think it is much nicer than our own
We’ll stay a while and then get extradited home, extradited home
Fell asleep again on the highway between Illinois and Cleveland
My eyes were open by then but my companion said I was sleeping hard so I did my part before we got too far
And then he punched me in the nose
My issue rests not with the action that he chose
A broken bone sure does beat traveling alone
Traveling alone
If we make it back before tonight
If our bail comes through, like you said it might
If we make it back, before tonight
If Niagara Falls like you said it might

Beautiful
03:22
|
|||
This face might cover up the thoughts I have most every day
You're beautiful but restless
Distilled in secrecy you come from earth or so they say
but you are restless and violent
Fog descends like a kiss
The air thick with the mystery of this
You look over your shoulder
and your breath and your breath clears the mist
Your face might hover up above my eyes in dreams you are so beautiful and broken
Instill belief in me, you come to earth a day too late
Your beauty worthless and violent
Come in from the cold, submit your bones to the fire
Lay your head upon the stone, forget your life for just a while
You are twisted you are cold you are angry you've been told
but you still act like you don't know

The Orbiters
06:09
|
|||
Boarded up the windows, drew an X across the door
Mirrors in the driveway, laser beams across the floor
To keep us aware
To keep them out there
I’m not takin my meds no more
I’m gonna trade em all for ammo and alcohol and ima
dig a hole in the backyard wide enough and deep enough for us all
I’m not going to bed no more
I’m gonna stay awake as long as it takes to find
Another indication we’re not alone out here, 500 million miles is a long way to drive
It’s long way to fly
Then when dark descended down on us
The orbiters all right above my house
I wanted you to be cold as death
But when i got home you were still cooking meth
Paranoid, saying somebody’s in the sky ready to come down at the first morning light
You were warm as a furnace your face on fire
Your eyes glowed in the butane light, you said come outside
Yeah come outside
Then I saw the hole you’d dug yourself
Six by six by four and black as hell
As long as nobody calls the cops or makes any sudden movements you won't get shot a lot
A lot happened when you were gone
The light years passing by, such a long way to fly, yeah such a wrong way to die
To keep us in there

Tied up the Horses
05:51
|
|||
I tied up the horses and wiped off the blood
The sweet smell of anguish in the setting sun
I murdered a traveler and both of his sons
I took both his horses and both of his guns
I ordered a whiskey and sat down hard
The earth spun around me as I fell apart
Suddenly silence then hammer clicks
I close both of my eyes and see what happens next
And all I see is red
I'll be fine I guess
I'll probably move out west to the unknown
Where did he get
They'll ask themselves and say wherever wretched cowards go
Where did he go
I went to the mountains to see what's left
I found no remorse for the murderous theft
I got it on camera the light don't lie
Deleted the film and I went inside
And all I see is red

Ramona Road
06:35
|
|||
Check into your hotel before it gets too dark
Before you fall apart from all the booze you drank
Pull the shades down tight forget the world outside, forget your alibis, all your ill timed lies
Turn the water on, what an accomplishment, and then you wake up four days later in a pool of blood
Fast forward again, and then you're driving alone, all alone on the edge of Ramona road
In tune with what we are all told
Creeping toward the line, your fingers holding tight, turning your knuckles white, reaching toward the light
You pull the steering wheel, the tires hit the sand, and then you wake up to one hundred thousand screaming fans
Would they believe you if you told them that you lied, and that you had been lying your entire life
Someone took your shoes and someone took your coat, next thing you know it there's a knife at your open throat
In tune with what we are all sold
I'm breaking down

Forests and Fields
05:38
|
|||
Well I went down to the forests and the fields
and I met a man and he told me to run for governor
So I left home for the sickness, for the sickness in the leaves from the trees of my soul
I'll smoke whatever you decide to put in my lungs
and I'll drink all of that poison that our parents told us comes
it comes from the devil, from the devil in the snake who sowed the seed of temptation
I am a man, I am falling toward the sky, I am starting to realize that you're gone
I am a drug, I am fixated on love, but you know that you can trust my mind
But when the seasons change I'm fine
Yeah when the seasons change I'm fine
I am asleep and I dream of things to eat and I wait for you to walk to my door
You aren't mad you're just trying to make me sad but the game that we once had we have no more
But then I feel your cold wind doth blow
and then I see your ice and your snow
and then the fumes fill the car and I inhale your guitar and your notes
and all the oxygen we missed won't mean nothing when we kiss, I'm so stoned
This stuff magnifies all the doubt that's in your eyes, and the satellites that fly by your brain
Drinking something laced with the terrifying taste of the shame and the disgrace in your veins
then you hold the rag to my mouth
and you leave it there til I pass out
Sleeping soundly in a pocket, a pocket made for dead men
